Preparation

Prior to attending an interview you should be fully aware of the contents of your cv, know why you are interested in the role and why the Company should be interested in you! Be prepared to provide evidence to back up your statements.

Other areas to consider:-

  • Find out Company details via the website or library. If you cannot find any literature, telephone the company and ask for information to be sent to you.
  • Prepare questions to ask (see below).
  • Plan your journey – get a map if necessary
  • Decide what to wear – this should be appropriate to the position. A suit is the most acceptable.


Questions

  • Prepare at least 5-6 questions to ask relating to the job. The areas of prospects, training, daily duties, what the team is like you’d be working with, social aspects.
  • Avoid ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers, always expand on the information and sell yourself
  • Do not raise the issue of salary at the early stage of an interview.
  • Do not be afraid to take a list of questions – this demonstrates preparation.
  • Be prepared to tell the interviewer your strengths and weaknesses.




Questions you may be asked 

  1. What do you know about our company?
  2. What do you know about the role?
  3. What does your current or last job involve?
  4. Are there certain aspects you really enjoy or dislike and why?
  5. What can you bring to the role?
  6. Demonstrate how you ……
  7. Give an example of ……..
  8. What would you do if …….

Body Language

Remember the interview starts in the Reception area, so be polite to the receptionist and sit confidently, perhaps reading Company literature provided.

Verbal and physical communication can say a lot about you, so remember to to:

  • Give a firm, warm handshake
  • Smile occasionally and nod
  • Keep a good posture
  • Maintain eye contact with the interviewer
  • Look interested

Other tips 

  • Turn your mobile off
  • Do not smoke before (or during) the interview
  • Listen carefully to the question asked
  • Do not be negative about other employers or colleagues
